Somerville House is a prestigious girls school in South Brisbane that first opened its doors to students in 1899. The venue is an ‘old school’ heritage-listed, colonial-style building. Prototype was very conscious to provide furnishings that complemented this style. However, the team also brought some colour to the space through the use of custom upholstery, and modern furniture shapes such as round ottomans.

The Brief

Prototype was to create an inviting and relaxing space for the teaching staff of Somerville House. The focal space is essentially a staff common room, where teachers can relax and unwind between classes. As such, seating was the primary requirement. Prototype was engaged to fit out the staff dining and lounge space with custom sofas, Vienna dining chairs, ottomans, custom booth seating and coffee tables.

How We Did It

Prototype worked directly with the school to meet their specific requirements with both supplied and manufactured pieces for the indoor/outdoor staff relaxation area.

Prototype constructed two styles of custom single seaters, seven with arms and seven without, as well as a 2.5 seater without arms. The pine timber frames were stained in the same finish as the existing furniture.

Prototype also supplied their popular Vienna stools, an apt choice for this venue which highlight a Colonial style, for the dining space. This stool is part of a family of Vienna pieces, which can be complemented with a raw or vintage finish such as a walnut stain. These particular stools were stained to match the existing furniture. They're a durable, practical, and simple addition to the space.

For a cosier option, the venue sought some banquette seating, which Prototype custom made to their requirements. The long banquette was upholstered in a durable, neutral-coloured fabric.

Ottomans with extra cushioning were scattered around the space for quick and easy seating, or an optional footrest option. A total of 14 ottomans were made, including some in red, some in a buttermilk yellow, and the rest in green.

Prototype also accompanied the new varied seating options with tables to hold textbooks, laptops, and assignments for marking. Prototype stained timber coffee and side tables to accompany the banquette, sofas, and dining stools, all constructed in solid European beech timber with a criss-crossed base design.

The project, including all custom work, was completed in a brief 8-10 week period from order to completion. The venue is now a practical, modernised relaxation hub with comfortable and varied seating for up to 30 teachers at a time who wish to dine, prepare lessons, conduct meetings and relax.
